2022 Occupancy Survey – HIGHLIGHTS

The  ORANJ Research Page has the results of the 2022 Occupancy Survey along with these highlights which summarize the results.  ORANJ is indebted to Jim Gallagher, chair of Research for conducting the survey and analyzing the results.

  • Published annually since 2005, except for the two pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. The 2022 survey reports on occupancy data from 24 of the 25 ORANJ member communities. Reports of previous surveys are available at the research page.
  • Because of unusual expenses related to the pandemic, no data on increases in monthly fees were included in the current survey.
  • Responding to the growing needs of seniors with cognitive disorders, the Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) of New Jersey have opened more than 300 residences, now called ”Memory Care” units. Started nearly ten years ago in a few communities, this ORANJ annual Survey reports their number for the first time: 16 communities now have 313 units currently occupied by 268 residents.
  • One community reported that it is no longer providing Skilled Nursing Care.
  • Numbers of residents have understandably decreased by some 600 during the past two years as many seniors rode out the pandemic in their homes. The current total is 9,699, almost 6% fewer than last reported in 2019.
  • 2 Communities serve more than 1,000 residents each;
  • 2 Communities number between 500 and 600 each;
  • 8 Communities number between 300 and 400;
  • 10 Communities number between 200 and 300;
  • 3 Communities serve fewer than 200 residents.
  • The distribution of communities throughout the State is fairly uniform, with four or five communities located in each of the State’s five regions.
  • The largest community serves 1772 residents; the smallest numbers 125.
