Pet Policies in New Jersey CCRCs

ORANJ recently conducted a survey of New Jersey CCRC’s with respect to the possession of pets. A report was issued by Dave Hibberson, president of the Harrogate Residents Association. The full survey report provides data for ech of the New Jersey CCRCs.

The following facilities have explicit rules and regulations about pets:
Crestwood Manor, The Evergreens, Fellowship Village, Franciscan Oaks, Keswick Pines, Bristol Glen, Meadow Lakes, Monroe Village, Seabrook Village, Stonebridge.

Navesink Homes does not allow pets. Keswick Pines, Cedar Crest, and the Evergreens allow one pet at the time a resident enters, but when that pet dies, they do not allow a replacement.

Pet approval lies with Resident Services at Crane’s Mill, Cedar Crest, Crestwood Manor, Medford Leas, and Seabrook Village; at Harrogate, it’s with the Director of Marketing. All facilities that allow pets require that they be registered with management in some form.

Five New Jersey CCRCs specify the maximum size of dogs, and six require that cats be declawed. Some also have regulations regarding fish and birds, and some require the payment of an annual fee if the resident keeps a pet.

All facilities state that a pet must be kept in the owner’s apartment and pets are not permitted in certain areas, such as dining rooms, the health center, where food is being prepared, etc.

Four facilities have prohibitions regarding visiting pets, and Harrogate specifies certain pet conditions under which an applicant would not be admitted or, if admitted with a pet, the pet could be removed.
