CCRC Veterans Property Tax Deduction: Current Status

Both the New Jersey Senate and Assembly have passed legislation that extends eligibility for a veterans’ property tax deduction for residents of Continuing Care Communities (CCRCs).  In that it requires an amendment to the State Constitution for this change to become law, the next step is to secure passage of concurrent resolutions in both legislative bodies that will permit the change to be placed on the November ballot for a referendum vote by the residents of New Jersey.  On May 30, 2019 the concurrent resolution in the Senate, SCR-110, was passed on a floor vote without opposition.  Now we are looking for a similar vote in the Assembly on ACR-134.  Should that occur before the legislature adjourns for summer we will have completed all the actions needed to see a referendum on the ballot in November.

  1. Now that the NJ law on the Veterans’ Property Tax Deduction has passed on the November ballot, does it take effect immediately? Can claims be filed for the 2019 NJ tax return?
