I’ve been active in ORANJ for 15 years.  Now because of the recent Zoom conversations it’s starting to feel like community. It’s good to be connected.

After the introductions, we learned that:

  • Staff shortages are a problem everywhere. Often new hires who are about to start then change their minds at the last minute. Sometimes this is because the current employer has offered an increase in wages to hold on to staff.
  • Springpoint will be outsourcing food service to Morrison to all seven of its New Jersey CCRCs. Is this good or bad?  Some CCRCs with that had this experience said not much had changed with the switchover.
  • Jim Gallagher, chair of the ORANJ Research Committee will soon be contacting presidents for the 2022 Occupancy Survey, the first one since 2019.
  • Rick Ober of Stonebridge has been nominated to become VP for the Central Region.
  • Friends Village is in the process of being acquired by Fellowship Senior Living (which in, addition to the Fellowship Village CCRC, operates home care programs, a Cultural Arts Center and in 2023 will open a Fitness Center for the wider community)
  • In April George Torpey expressed interest in having Zoom meetings for the Southeast Region. In May there was a suggestion of Zoom for Springpoint CCRS. There was agreement that while smaller zooms organized by region, affiliation, or topic would be nice, we should still have Zooms where all ORANJ members can share common problems and suggestions.

The June Zoom conversation will be on the second Wednesday, June 8, at 11 am.

  1. It was rewarding to participate in the Zoom meeting. As a new member I was wondering if the topic of legislation or rules was ever addressed with regards to a time frame for returning buy in funds to the family when the CCRC resident passes.

  2. Good Question!
The story of the battle over refund of entry deposits is a long and complicated one. ORANJ succeeded in passing a law that provides for FIFO returns rather than waiting for the apartment to be reoccupied. This success is described in the July 2018 issue of our newsletter. link to newsletter.
Some time in the next few weeks (before the June 8 conversation) I’ll start a separate post on this topic.
