The Organization of Residents Associations of New Jersey

Summary and video of May’s Second Wednesday conversation

Thirty-one residents from eighteen communities met via Zoom for conversation on May’s second Wednesday.  Barbara Trought moderated and the discussion began with an announcement that we are looking for a new person to host our Zooms.  Anyone who is just a bit familiar with Zoom could handle this, as the meetings are already scheduled and all that is necessary is to send out the invitations to the pre-arranged list and then sign in to begin the meeting on time.  If you’re that person or know of one, send an email to oranjccrc@gmail.com

We talked of the ORANJ Tree, ORANJ’s newsletter of the recent past.  Again, all that’s needed to begin on-line publishing is someone to put together recent news – there’s lots of that – much as these short notes are doing.  Otherwise, it would be good if communities with newsletters shared them with others.  ORANJ can definitely help with that.

The National Continuing Care Retirement Association [NaCCRA] is holding a webinar on 19 May about caregivers and caregiving.  An email with the invitation has already been sent to all communities.

Fire safety and how CCRCs handle drills and instructions was a lively session, as was a short overview of how many communities, with or without nursing units, have social workers.  Their importance was underlined when people began enumerating all the things these staff people do.

This year’s plenary meeting will be held at Medford Leas and residents there are already beginning preparations.

Bruce Schundler ended the meeting with a wrapup of ORANJ’s legislative agenda for the year.  After this round of primaries and elections, ORANJ will begin to ask the state to execute some of the laws already enacted that impact CCRCs, such as where state supervision actually belongs [a robust Department of Insurance rather than a relatively toothless Department of Community Affairs, for example] and real resident representation on corporate boards and advisory committees.
