The Organization of Residents Associations of New Jersey

Summary of June’s Second Wednesday Conversation

The meeting, via ZOOM, was called to order by President, Barbara Trought, at 10:00am. There were “27 screens” present. Barbara noted that Jack Mahon has moved from his CCRC. Ann Campbell has temporarily replaced him.

Bruce Shundler, president of ORANJ, noted that Nicole Zimmerman, who works for NJ State Dept. of Community Affairs (DCA) in charge of CCRCs, may not attend our meeting this morning. She did not.

Bob McLauglin asked how the Residents Councils are funded. Some were not funded but are given funds from their CCRC administration for their events, etc. One collects $50 from new residents when they move in. Some have a store where they sell cards, etc. Several have thrift shops. Some collect dues from all residents each year ranging from $10 per person to $120 per person.  As for scholarships for employees, some have a set amount that each resident contributes to the fund; other CCRC residents make donations to the fund.

One CCRC has a monthly social event when all come to mingle so residents can get to know each other. Staff attend as well.

John from Crestwood Manor stated that Blue Cross/Blue Shield doesn’t cover some charges. He asked what others were doing. Atrium tried to get into the network with no luck. Don Reardon stated that with Medicare Advantage plans the doctors can drop in and out at will and the policy holder can’t do anything about it. Barbara asked that we have facts before speaking. She advised us to look into Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare.

BJ asked when dues are requested to be paid to ORANJ. Ken Peabody, Treasurer, said that notices were sent to Presidents. Most have paid.

John from Crestwood Manor asked how many have AED’s accessible & available around the building. Some had them available around the building.  Others said Security has them.

Barbara said she reported to the Executive Committee about our good conversations. There will not be meetings in July or August. The next meeting will be on September 9, 2026 via ZOOM. The meeting was adjourned at 10:50am.
